Our body metabolism is very dynamic and it keeps on changing its face from our birth to adolescence and from adolescence to old age. We need to cope up with these changes by making certain changes in our diet and physical exercise so that a healthy metabolic rate is ensured and you may be able to enjoy every stage of your age at the fullest. As one proceeds towards older age, slower metabolism is observed and some bodily functions start becoming lesser efficient.

Physiological Changes with Aging

One area that is most prominently affected is musculoskeletal area. You need to take care of it once you are 35 and onwards. You can reduce the disorders to a great extent by avoiding adverse effects to muscles and joints and for that, you need to stay away from alcohol, drugs, caffeine, smoking etc. stay healthy by reducing mental stress trough socializing, eating healthy foods, and living in hygienic environment.

A common disorder seen mostly in old age is the loss of hearing capabilities. In some cases, people even go completely deaf after 40, a condition known as presbycusis. A common symptom of this disorder is that you tend to feel uncomfortable to high-pitched voices. E.g. you may not like to attend concerts any more. This is because the high pitch hearing ability has been affected which in turn also leads to loss in hearing capabilities for even lower pitch voices. With this disorder, when people talk, it seems as if they are mumbling. The proper understanding of speech is also affected and the victim may have a problem in understanding some letters e.g. the pronunciation of K might seem distorted. For some, the CH sound becomes distorted. You need to make such people understand your body language or make them learn some signs to properly understand what you are saying. Another easier remedy can be the use of hearing aids or Assistive Learning Devices which act by blocking unnecessary background voices and thus reducing the distortion and improving clarity.

These are the natural signs of aging but there are some other signs which though mostly occur in old age but are unnatural. E.g. a chain smoker may develop lung cancer when he reaches old age.

The aging also brings weight change in many, especially for those who have a family history in obesity. The stored body fat percentage may fluctuate up to 30 % once you reach age of 40. wrinkles start appearing along with other natural signs.
