If you have a back pain which is mild in nature and you think it is just a result of over exertion and can be treated without medication, you can take help of some light remedies at home. Most of the time, you can treat back pain just by having bed rest, using hot or cold pads, having massage or just by relaxing a bit.
How to Treat Common Back pain
If you are suffering from a muscle pull, pain relievers can help reduce the pain. Common medications used for such pain are ibuprofen, and aspirin or other medications which have acetaminophen. However, do not rely on combined use of aspirin and ibuprofen. Moreover, if you have any allergies, asthma or polyps, stay away from aspirin and ibuprofen.
Cold packs are a good remedy for treating back pain, however, if you are suffering from rheumatoid arthritis or similar disorders, cold pads should be avoided. Otherwise, in normal circumstances, if cold packs are kept on the aching are for long, they help fight the pain due to muscle spasm or inflammation. However, to relieve such pains, you should keep the cold packs on aching area for as long as twenty minutes.
You can then apply hot packs on aching area where you applied cold packs. However, hot packs should not be applied over scar tissues nether should they be applied if you have bad circulation of blood. Hot packs too need twenty minutes to be affective on the aching area. Avoid heating pads because they are believed to be unsafe by most of the experts. Taking a shower with hot, steamy water can also help, or you can use hydrocollaters on that area. Hydrocollater are easily available on medical stores.
If you have tight muscles, you may find a body massage working for you. Get the aching area rubbed gently by someone who is willing. Or else, use the services of local therapists who are generally affordable. However, if you feel that massage is adding to your pain instead of curing, get medical treatment. If the back pain is due to an accident or due to falling, do not use massage, you should first get medical treatment.
Relaxing can also help if you have mild back pain due to over exertion. It would give a bit of rest to your tightened muscles.
Sitting whole day results in back pain and you should make sure to have a walk for 20 minutes at least. Sitting for long-span of time, lying on back, standing for long time or walking too long can put pressure on spine, resulting in back pain. You can reduce the chances of complicating a mild pain, by learning proper sitting strategies.
A useful strategy is to put a rolled up towel behind your lower back while sitting. This would provide lumber support. However, if you are suffering from spine stenosis, or spondylolisthesis, avoid this strategy or you would develop irritation.
While sitting, prefer using the chair with armrests, so that you might be able to relax by lowering yourself. do not put your legs directly in front of you and do not bend when getting up from the chair. Moreover, do not twist your body while getting up from sitting posture. Do not sit for long hours. If your job requires you to sit longer, you should try to get up and walk for some time in intervals.
