Effects of Medications on Your Sexual health
Many of you might not be aware that medications can affect your sexual health in many ways. Even those medications which are not directly related to sexual health can yield negative impacts on sexual capabilities and libido. Medications which are meant to cure other disorder can have indirect effects on sexual organs or psychological capabilities. In order to learn more about these side effects, keep reading this article.
Effects of Medications on Sexual health
Among the various dimensions of sexual health which can be affected by medications, the one common type of effect is seen on libido. A number of different drugs can significantly reduce sexual desire. Moreover, sometimes, the person under medication fails to maintain sexual arousal to an extent which could help to attain orgasm. In men, particularly, sustaining the erection may become a problem. In this case, no specific related problem is seen yet in women. However, some researchers believe that such problems do exist in women as well but haven’t been measured properly so far.
Among a long list of medications that can affect sexual health, one significant example is the use of antidepressants. The underlying principle behind the functioning of most of the antidepressants is that they hamper the functioning of neural receptors in brain e.g. that of serotonin. Although, this basic working principle does not seem to have any impact on sexual health because neural receptors like these are not found to have any direct relation with sexual capabilities, however, in many cases, an individual’s unique biochemistry can result in some negative impacts of drugs on various areas including sexual health. In most cases, such disorders seem to linger on as long as the person keeps on taking that particular antidepressant. Luckily, in most of the cases, the negative effects can be averted by a mere change of the antidepressant.
Proper blood circulation is very important for a normal sexual intercourse, and this is especially true for me. So in some cases, the drugs taken to cure high blood pressure can cast negative effects on abilities like arousal and erection. Moreover, the heart’s health is indirectly related with sexual health because a healthy heart is imperative for enhancing endurance for physical sexual activity.
Does Age Affect Desire for Sex in Women?
There is a misconception very ripe in the society that as women age, since their hormonal secretion level decreases, it implies that their desire for sex and the level of enjoyment would also decrease. However, recent studies have shown that this is not the case in fact. The researches have shown there is no relation between the decreasing hormonal levels and desire for sex in women. Nor does it affect the level of satisfaction during intercourse. In recent studies, the factor like orgasm, attitudes towards sex, petting etc were taken as indicators of sex desire and satisfaction to find out if menopause and age have anything to do with these two factors. Surprisingly, the study showed there wasn’t any difference in the frequency of sex or the level of satisfaction and orgasm related to old age. E.g. among women up to the age of 45, 29% said that they have orgasm very often as compared to 26% women of ages above 45. Even more surprising is the fact that where 41% of women above the age of 45 reported to have orgasms often, only 29% of the women below 45 reported that they have orgasms often.
During the sexual activity which did not involve intercourse, women above 45 reported to have fewer orgasms. Both the groups experienced the both conditions of satisfying love-making experience i.e. they experienced not only the physical satisfaction but also the emotional closeness to their partners.
What Really Does Affect Desire for Sex in Women?
From the analysis of the results presented by the study, and by carefully comparing the answers of both the groups of young and old women, as well as from those with sexual problems an those without any problems, it was concluded that it was not the age which really mattered in sexual relationships, rather the only factor which could substantially affect the desire for sex in women was the quality of relationship, especially the degree of respect the women got from their partners. It was a factor of prime importance in shaping sexual attitude particularly in older age.
Comparing the other researches too, the researchers found that age or menopause cannot be regarded as a compelling and only feature responsible for decline in desire for sex in women. Rather, many other factors can be responsible if any sexual problem occurs in mid age, e.g. contextual factors, life stressors, past sexual experiences, and mental health etc.
Foods for Sexual Health
Since centuries, we had been hearing of the foods which were known to enhance sexual desire and sexual health and cure sexual problems. These can be called foods for sexual health. However, these aphrodisiacs were a myth until substantial proof was provided by scientific research. The healing and protective effects of fruits and vegetables for sexual health have been proved with compelling proofs.
Foods for Sexual Health
One such fruit with a reputation of enhancing sexual health is watermelon which deserves to be the first in the list of foods for sexual health. The lycopene contained in it is an affective antioxidant which had been used as a precaution against prostate cancer is also an effective nutrient to enhance male fertility.
A study was carried out to scientifically test watermelon’s effect on male fertility. 30 infertile men were taken as a sample and were asked to take a trial of thirty days with lycopene supplement. The lycopene supplement was found to have positive effects on delivery mechanism in men. Not only does it improve sperm concentration but also its mobility.
In addition to lycopene, watermelon contains another compound called amino acid citrulline which can be regarded as nature’s Viagra. Both citrulline and Viagra increase blood supply to pelvic area. Citrulline does it by increasing release of nitric oxide and Viagra destroys the enzymes that reduce nitric oxide’s effect.
Lycopene is abundant in red portion of watermelon whereas citrulline is found in the rind(the white part). One of them fights free radicals and the other cures erectile dysfunction, giving a perfect combination for the improvement of overall male sexual health. All these benefits make watermelon one of the perfect foods for sexual health.
Though we have been told a lot about the sexually transmitted diseases but we are mostly told to only modify our sexual activity to avoid such diseases. However, proper diet can also play a significant role in decreasing the frequency and degree of severity of STDs. Many STDs like genetic herpes and others can become more likely if you have a low immunity. Hence it is obvious that taking those foods which enhance immunity would reduce the risk of such disorders.
Researchers have found that many vegetables e.g. broccoli can be helpful in reducing the chances of genetic herpes. A recent study suggests that the vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and keep the herpes virus dormant.
Another compound called lysine is good at preventing herpes and it is abundant in soybeans, and Lima beans.
Pappiloma virus is perhaps the most common virus causing sexual disorders. A proper diet can not only prevent the virus activity but can also be helpful in curing those who have acquired it. Researchers have found that women who take more vegetables in their diet are less prone to HPV infections and thus less prone to cervical cancer and infertility. In that perspective, foods rich in lycopene, e.g. tomatoes and watermelons are very effective.
In addition, it is important to know that low carb diet can reduce a woman’s chances of pregnancy. Moreover, even moderately high protein diet can hinder early development of embryo. The researchers suggest that when a woman is trying to conceive, her diet should contain 20 percent lesser proteins than overall carbohydrate content. Moreover, considering the importance of folic acid against neural tube disorders, all foods abundant in folic acid should be preferred.
